State Library by HG Merz

The new reading room of the State Library on Unter den Linden, designed by HG Merz Architekten of Stuttgart, opened in March 2013.

The design emerged in 2000 from a competition. In the smaller of the two new reading rooms old and new are interlinked. The restrained reading hall with 48 workstations complements the neo-baroque elements of the existing building. The new center of the library is a glass cube for the general reading room with 36 meters height and lots of daylight. Behind wooden bookshelves on three floors narrow stairs lead to the top level of the room with a view into the glass cube.
